Dexter

The high points of my life are usually the entertainment that I take in. The best thing going on for the past couple years are Dexter. I just watched the first episode of the third season and this show has not failed me once. The best thing on TV ever.

Although the third season has started to leak right now, the first episode premieres on September 28th. If you haven't watched this show yet, do it. The book series that it's based is equally as good.

I have to admit, as skeptical as I was about the show, it is pretty engrossing. I watched all of season 1 in a glorious 2-day binge. I have S2 borrowed from a buddy. HBO better step their game up because I can tell you who wins between this and fucking, John From Cincinnati or whatever.

Showtime has been kicking HBO's ass when it comes to tv shows. Dexter, Weeds & Bullshit are the shows I'm most excited to download on a weekly basis.

HBO did do John Adams, which was pretty good, but I haven't watched it all yet.

When HBO had Curb, Sopranos, Extras, Rome, and Big Love all happening, it was pretty much unimpeachable. Now it's all meh-worthy stuff like Flight of the Concords and Entourage and WTF fare like True Blood and John From Cincinnati.

I dig Weeds and Dexter, and have enjoyed a few forwarded YouTubes of Bullshit from time to time. I'll have to check out more. They just found Dexter's body stash underwater in the ep I watched in Season 2! Eee so exciting.

We disagree on Conchords, which I totally love, but I didn't care for Rome and I would put Extras in the meh-worthy category.

Really, if I think about it, both networks nail out winners and losers. TV is better because of their efforts so I forgive them for the occasional miss like John From Cincinnati. It's better to go out on a limb and let experimental shows like JFC happen.

The funny thing is I praise Rome but it didn't grab me enough to watch the whole thing. And I'm even more under-versed on Conchords, having only seen a couple eps and some YouTubes, and bits of their Sasquatch show. But you "meh"ing Extras -- that hurts. :(

I would never begrudge HBO and Showtime their efforts to do something different, re: Jamaican Fried Chicken. It's just that at the moment, HBO has given up the throne for a bit IMO. Showtime is even getting the new Louis CK special. I'm sure HBO will bounce back; over the last decade they've done so much amazing stuff. But yeah, the competition is good.

Well, I've only seen a couple episodes of extras, so I have the same problem that you have with those other shows. It makes sense that if it doesn't grab you, why would you bother watching more episodes.

Maybe HBO will get their groove back when they start A Song of Ice and Fire.
