ok. something very strange just happened. I was just typing in a lj entry, and the computer started writing to the harddisk. It just wrote something for 30 minutes. I have no idea what just happened, but it's freaking my out. it's stopped now, but I don't know what cause it, and I don't know where it got the stuff it was writing or where the stuff has gone now. very confused and worried about my computer.

more info
some more details on this. it seems that /var/spool got flushed. I lost the mail on my computer (which i don't use, so that's ok) and several other things like my uptime records and such. nothing too important. i'm so confused, though.

Check cron. What operating system is this? Furthermore, It could just be the VM commiting back dirty pages etc. Although if files are gone/missing it was most likely a user process. Useful tools here would be 'lsof' to list open files. vmstat, and iostat might also be of interest. If the free unices only had a sar..

I'm running slackware linux kernel 2.2.15. it seems that everything just flushed because if I look for any info on this, there is nothing there. hrm....

Your system could have been running 'updatedb' which is the database 'locate' works from. It usually happens late at night. Mine runs at 4:40am from nobody's crontab.
