New Music First Impressions

The Streets - The Hardest Way To Make an Easy Living

Mike Skinner is going more danceable. This is a good thing. The new album is filled bouncing tunes. The subject matter doesn't appear to be as serious, or maybe it's just not quite so depressed. I've got to give it some more listens, but I like it.

The Flaming Lips - At War With The Mystics

Holy Crap, this album is good. Is it another Yoshimi? Hmm... possibly. It's hard to know with just one listen if it's passing up other material. I would say that it's better than Soft Bulletin, maybe.

Calexico - Garden Ruin

For being alt-country, it's sure is jumping around a lot into different genres. The end of the album seemed a little bit on the calm side compared to how it starts. Maybe it would be a good album to put on when I'm feeling like taking a nap.

I've been listening to him off and on since Original Pirate Material came out, and I still can't decide at all if I like the Streets at all.

Sometimes I think its brilliant and novel, other times I really think its shite.

Not quite sure why.

I remember when Original Pirate Material came out, I didn't connect with it. A Grand Don't Come For Free was what got me listening and even that album took a lot of time for me to get into. But once I got into it, I fell in love with both albums.

It kind of requires a particular mood, though. I can't throw it on any old time.

Have you heard that 'Lips album that's meant for four CD players? It's freakin' cool.

Calexico is doing a free in - store today at our neighbourhoosd shop. Feel free to join us if you can make it to SF in time.

Zaireeka is the four disc lips album. I've gotten to listen to it once and it blew my mind, it was so cool. I loved it.

Actually, Calexico is doing an instore in Seattle on thursday. It looks like they are doing a west coast store tour this week. I might go to that one.

Easy Street Queen Anne, I assume?
I saw Juliette and the Licks there this winter.

I'll try to remember to let you know how it is tonight.

Yea, I think it will be fun to go down there there and catch them. Looks like the show starts at 9pm, and instores are always good idea to get there early.

Oh, I don't know. When I went to the They Might Be Giants instore there, I got there 30 minutes early and the store was about half full. I had pretty good location to see the band play. I might shoot for something similar.

I was also thinking about maybe going down even earlier and getting dinner before walking to easy street. I'm making this shit up as I go!
