Men with high self esteems make poor choices when it comes to risky sexual behavior.

Ah, DUH! I thought everyone knew that men with high self esteems get laid more by women with low self esteems. The men with low self esteems don't feel confident enough to close the deal most of the time and women with high self esteem are more likely to fall into a relationship.

Wait - the women with high self esteem are more likely to fall into a relationship?

Or I suppose they become hermits and live in a apartment with 6 cats.

You are still a couple cats shy, though!

I always thought of those too things being more likely for women with low self-esteem. In otherwords, the relationship provides the security and constant source of validation that they need -- or they are so insecure that they can't find a relationship and they end up compensating with cats.

I suppose I have a bias here -- that people who seek relationships typically do so for the stability and validation. I usually think of relationship oriented people as having lower self-esteems.

I think I understand what tyrven means by this, in that some people with low self esteems fall into relationships because of being codependant, but by no means do i think it's absolute.

There are a lot of types of relationships out there and by no means do they need to be one sided or dependant.

Not to be confused with the statement "People in relationships have low self esteems"; that obviously doesn't make any sense. I'm talking about people who need to be in a relationship or define themselves by their relationship.

Correction: Women with high self esteem are more likely to be alone because they think they're better than everyone else.

Or become a dominatrix over the men with low self esteems.

This article had nothing to do with high self esteem.

The way I read it, they weren't judging if men were actually good looking, only if they thought they were good looking. That is at least part of self esteem.

i guess i just associate high self-esteem with intelligence and accomplishments rather than looks

Maybe I'm wrong to assume people are more superficial than that?

I think people can tie their self-worth (and thus self-esteem) into either. I agree with Patrick, though; I think most people are more superficial than that. Given the opportunities that being good looking opens (re: studies correlating success and beauty), that may be splitting hairs.

Yea, it's two sides of the same coin. Long term happiness may be more attainable if you define your self-worth on what you do instead of what you look like (or more specifically how others see you), but in this world of fast food and fast cars, who wants to worry about long term?
