I hate not having a cell phone.

My contract with cingular expired last november so not only am I without a cell phone, but I am without a contract too. Signing up for a new phone contract is always a good excuse to get a new fancy phone with all the trimmings and since they have that whole local number portablity thing, I can change providers and keep my phone number. Of course, this begs the following questions.

Poll #648484 cell phone service

Who is your current cell phone provider?

Also, any horror stories about your cell phone company? Any happy stories?

Tomorrow, I think I need to go out and do some more shopping for phones.

It's hard to rate Cingular because the phone service itself is really good. I get great coverage no matter where in the US I go. But the customer service sucks donkey balls.

I know, recent experience with them has made me really unhappy.

But in the past I've had some great customer service. (see below)

Story time
I have had a large, mixed history with cingular. I first signed up with them in November of 2001. If I stick with them, this will be the third time I signed a contract with them.

I kinda view it like the time before they merged with AT&T and then after they merged. Before they merged, I had several happy experiences with customer service with cingular. Having previously lost a phone and going into a store, an employee helped me out by giving me a free loaner phone until my new phone came in on order. I have also had people in the call center help me out by sneaking discounts on my bill when I needed it, or by secretly adding minutes to my phone.

But my whole recent problems with the billing and nonpayment have generally found them to be unhelpful. A single nonpayment would cause my phone to be shut off and although they would set up a payment plan to pay it down, it's recently been very expensive for the amount of minutes I have actually been using. Having to pay $100 a month when my minute plan is only $39.99 or 49.99 leaves a very sour taste in my mouth.

I am currently looking at Verizon, but I don't want to commit to anything tonight.

I like Verizon's coverage, except that it doesn't work in the 'rents house.

Cingular is a little iffy on occasion, too. Often times, I would have to step outside to take a phone call.

Verizon wouldn't work in my apartment near UW. And sometimes I'd get bombarded with a weeks worth of voicemails all at once.

I switched to AT&T, and the service sucked.

Now I have Cingular and I've definitely had problems with it (esp billing and switching my address), but once I updated to the pink razr I can hear so much clearer and my service tends to be better. I'll stick with Cingular for now. So, I wouldn't say that I love it, but it's not too bad.

Oh my god, I can't believe how many problems I had with trying to change my address with cingular. I called them 6 or 7 times before it got fixed and I was getting my bills in the mail. I couldn't believe it.

They actual cell service has always left me pretty happy, though. Text messaging has always worked and SMS messaging works too.

Yeah, I had a really crappy phone before (as in, I should have just stuck with the free phone they give you), so since the upgrade, everything has been quite fine.

That billing thing is a bitch, though. And I plan to move again in a couple months. Great.

I've always had those little nokia phones, which have worked well enough. Whenever I have upgraded, I have been happy with what I got.

I agree, Pat should definitely get a pink RAZR.

I'm lead to believe that Verizon Wireless generates the little service bars where ever I happen to not be. Text messaging only seems to work sometimes, but that might be might fault, because I'm not entirely sure how to text message in the first place. Some of the customer service people are helpful and courteous, some are complete morons, and some are just giant asshats.

Watch out for the weird hip hop ring tone thing, too.

hmmm... that's not a very positive review. I would hate to switch from cingular to another company and be unhappy with the service!

hip hop ring tones don't make too much sense to me. I would rather go with 80s new wave pop ring tones. :)

i started out with AT&T, whose service sucked ass, which then became Cingular and Cingular's service sucks donkey balls. i never have consistent reception, especially in my own home(s). calls are usually dropped at least once if i'm walking around doing something or even move at all - sometimes it really is that bad. my contract with them has expired and i need to find a new provider, myself.

Cell phone use in houses has always been a little iffy for me. Some houses are better than others and I've noticed that over the years, cingular has been getting better. Not perfect by far, but I've learn to live with it.

If I switch, I will do a follow up post on how I feel about the new company.

okay. i had t mobile for almost 3 yrs, and i referred them to alll sotrts of people.

then they started fucking up, and my serivce towers sucked, so i called to quit and instead got talked into all this crazy shit. they ended up charging me $200 without reason, debited right from my accnt, and they agreed to pay it bakc, but i couldnt pay my rent because the money wouldnt be in my acct for at least 72 hours. so they basically fucked me out of $50.

so i cancelled the other day. they suck. don't fuck with them.

I've never had any problems at all. I rarely ever get dropped calls, and have service nearly everywhere.

The few times I've called customer service, they've been helpful. The same goes at the stores. I've never tried anything else to compare to, but I'm happy with my service.

FWIW, I use t-mobile, and I almost always get reception, I've only been f'd in the ass by them once with a weird service charge, and my phone is usable, and my rate-plan is fair. The setup isn't great, just OK, but considering how unhappy people are with their phones and service, I think my experience is probably above average.

Plus they have the keen pay-as-you-go plan, if you use less than 300 minutes a month it's totally great
