Yesterday night in detail

I glance down at my wrist, out of habit, but there is no watch there. I haven't worn a watch in about a year. It's a freckle past a hair, as my mother would say. Nonchalantly, I glance over to the VCR and see that it's actually 6:16 pm. There is still time, no rush yet. I've still got forty-five minutes to get across town. That will be no problem at all. I call up to my roommate and let him know that we need to leave in a minute or two. He yells down from his room that he will be there in a second.

I gather my things that are laying on the couch. I put some books and my CD player in my backpack and throw it over my head, strapping it to my back. Arian walks down the stairs and walks to the front door. I turn off the lights and we walk down the short pathway along the side of the house to where my sporty little red car is. It's an older vehicle, but it's holding up pretty well. There is a dent on the driver's side of the car next to the hood and it needs a car wash, but the car is in pretty good condition otherwise. I open my door and lean over, unlocking the passenger side door for Arian. Turning the key, we are off to Queen Anne for a free in-store concert by They Might Be Giants.

As we head up Roy St, I make a lap around the block to drive in front of Easy Street Records. Peering into the store, it doesn't look very crowded at all. I wrap around the block one more time and as luck would have it, these two girls get into their car right as I'm coming up next to them. I stop driving, back up a little bit to give them room to pull out and take the parking spot as soon as they leave. Rockstar parking and being a gentleman! I'm always looking to improve my karma if I can. After the car is parked, we walk down the street and around the corner to the record store where the band is playing.

We enter the store at about 6:50 pm and I can see that it's more crowded than I first though, but it's still not that bad. There is a lot of floor space and the audience has filled the back half of the store. We move in and find a place to stand amongst the CDs and DVDs and They Might Be Giants fans. After waiting for a little bit and watching the store fill up more with people, the lights dim and John and John come out. This is the second time I've seen them play and I'm really excited to see how they will approach a free in-store with children in comparison to a 21+ show at a the crocodile. John and John jump right into the show and start playing some of the new children's songs. They've got a lot of energy for a small show like this and the crowd is really into it. Even better, the focus isn't just for the children. They cover several of the classic songs from the album Flood like Istanbul and Particule Man and the biggest high point for me is right at the end of the performance and they jam through Fingertips. I have always wanted to hear Fingertips live.

The show lasts about 45 minutes long and we are out of the crowded store by 7:55 pm. Jarod meets up with Arian and I and we all walk over to Kid Valley for dinner. The meal is done quickly so we can get back to the house by 9 pm for this week's episode of 24. Jack Bauer is the bomb!

Fingertips
I saw them play Fingertips at a Halloween show about a year and a half ago. I so completely know how you feel.

They were supposed to come to Reed in the fall of 2001, but well, they were sort of nervous to fly here, understandably.

Re: Fingertips
They were suppose to come to seattle in september of 2001, but it the planes were all grounded and they drove across the country to catch up with the tour and made it to the california shows.
